Team Credits Good Chemistry for Historic Rise

The seniors on the North Rose-Wolcott boys varsity basketball team filed into the high school conference room early one recent morning to talk with a reporter about their 18-1 season.

They like to talk basketball at all levels, including college. They chatted about the surprisingly lopsided Syracuse Orange win over Florida State.

This NR-W Cougars group appreciates a good win. It’s something they know a thing or two about. They are, after all, Wayne County League Champions, a first since NR-W became a merged school district in the 1970s.

The team, under the leadership of head coach Brian Hoyt, took over sole possession of the county title after a 75 to 21 victory over Marion on Feb. 10.

What got them where they are?

“We’ve been playing together since we were in 5th grade, so I think just the teamwork and knowing how we play helped us a lot,” said Connor Pendleton, starting point guard.

Pendleton thought the team would be good this year, but didn’t foresee them having quite as good a year as they are having.

Luke Gerstner agreed that playing together so many years helped. And forward Dustin Reed, sitting along side center Garrett Hoyt, thinks good chemistry was the key.

Reed said knowing each other their whole lives, and knowing each other’s tendencies were all part of what fueled this championship season.

Guard Steven Geffert expected a tougher year.

“I expected it to be tougher with the non-league schedule we had this year,” Geffert said.

    Getting Better & Better

They have worked hard to get better as the season progressed.

“I think we’ve become a lot better. Getting to Blue Cross Arena last season and losing there made us wake up and realize this would be the year we would go as far as we can,” Reed said.

    The Next Step

Up next for this group of winners: The Section V tournament, in which NR-W is ranked first in Class B1.

They are scheduled to play Feb. 19 against the winner of the Danville vs. Wayland-Cohocton game.

But no matter how the sectionals go, the Cougars are Wayne County League Champions.

“First time in school history, “ said forward Elijah Durham. If they get their way, the Cougars will keep on making history.
