About 600 athletes from the schools of Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES will compete at North Rose-Wolcott Central School when it hosts Special Olympics Track and Field competition May 6.

Kathy Hoyt, NR-W Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, said NR-W will host Special Olympics during the current school year and next year as well.

“Each school district completes a two-year rotation,” Hoyt said. “The last two years, its been Marion.”

There will be track events, including 50 meter dash, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and a 100 meter relay event. Field events will include softball throw, tennis ball throw, running long jump and standing long jump.

Athletes age 7 and under may participate under the Special Olympics “Young Athletes” program and show their skills in the 25 meter dash and standing long jump.

Those athletes who are 8 years or older may enter one running event, one field event, and one relay.

Adapted athletes may enter one track event and one field event.

Registration will be 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and opening ceremonies are at 9:45 a.m. Competition begins at 10 a.m. May 6.

To handle such a large event, NR-W is looking for volunteers.

Event organizers are also working to raise $15,000 in cash and goods to fully fund the event both in 2016 and 2017 without cost to families or schools.

Money raised will cover the cost of t-shirts for Olympians and volunteers, medals, ribbons and lunches for athletes.

“Every cent donated will go toward these students and this event, thanks to the vast volunteer participation provided by the NR-W School and surrounding communities,” Hoyt said in a letter to businesses.

There are three donation levels, as follows:

    • Gold Sponsor – $500 & up

    — Business logo and website featured on event t-shirts, website and signage

    • Silver Sponsor – $250 & up

    — Business logo & website featured on event website and signage

    • Bronze Sponsor – $100 & up

    — Business name featured on event website and signage

In addition to cash, donations of drinks and snacks are also sought.

Those interested in volunteering or making a donation should contact Hoyt or Wendy Fralick at 315-594-8051 or at

“We’re looking for the community to step up and help out,” Hoyt said.
